Description

Deborah Hill's 'St George's Market A5 Print' is an artistic tribute to Belfast's last surviving Victorian covered market. Situated near the River Lagan and Waterfront Hall, St George's Market was commissioned by the Belfast Corporation (now Belfast City Council) and constructed in three phases between 1890 and 1896. The market, originally an open market likely containing a slaughterhouse and meat market, is now a bustling hub with over 300 traders, crafters, musicians, and food vendors.

The building, designed by city surveyor JC Bretland, is known for its red brick with sandstone dressing and features Roman-style arches adorned with Latin and Irish inscriptions, reflecting Belfast's cultural heritage. The market's resilience is also marked by its history during World War II, when it served as an emergency mortuary following the heavy bombing of Belfast.

Today, St George's Market not only functions as a market but also hosts a variety of events, from food festivals to art exhibitions, showcasing its versatility and cultural significance in Belfast.
