Deborah Hill's 'Samson & Goliath A5 Print' artistically portrays the iconic shipbuilding gantry cranes of Harland & Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Named after the Biblical figures Samson and Goliath, these cranes are not just engineering marvels but also symbolic representations of Belfast's rich industrial heritage. Erected by the German firm Krupp, Goliath was installed in 1969 and Samson followed in 1974. Towering over the city's skyline, Goliath stands at 96 meters and Samson at 106 meters, making them unmissable landmarks in Belfast.
These cranes, with a combined lifting capacity of nearly 1,700 tonnes, were once central to the bustling shipbuilding activity at Harland & Wolff, which at its peak employed 35,000 people. Although shipbuilding has ceased, the cranes remain active within the restructured shipyard, symbolising the city's industrial resilience and cultural identity. Recognised for their architectural and historic interest, these cranes were saved from demolition and now stand adjacent to the Titanic Quarter, a testament to Belfast's shipbuilding past.
