Origin Story

Coffee consumption in Northern ireland can be traced back to the heyday of the Harland & Wolff shipyards in the 1800s. Thousands of workers were employed to build grand shops, working long shifts and in dire need of a caffeine boost. The most famous ship from the yard was of course the RMS Titanic of the White Star Line. At the time of her construction in 1909, the Titanic was the largest man-made object on earth. She set sail herself carrying over 2 tonnes of coffee.

Large ships built in the Belfast yard were constructed with sheets of steel, held in place by iron rivets. Each rivet was heated red hot and then driven in place by two men wielding hammers on either side of the steel plate. The 'fire boys' were responsible for maintaining small coal fires throughout the ship to heat the rivets and it was on these fires that they also prepared coffee.

The coffee itself was prepared several times throughout the shift, and the beans were widely available, often having been traded for linen and rope. Belfast was home to the largest rope works in the world and exported across the globe.

So try some Titanic Blend coffee from the Belfast Coffee Company and just be thankful that the richness and warmth are purely to give you a perk up in the morning and not to help you survive the highly dangerous Victorian Belfast shipbuilding industry!
