Origin Story
The Dark Hedges is a beautiful avenue of beech trees planted by the Stuart family in the 18th century, as an imposing entrance for visitors as they approached the entrance to their Georgian mansion, Gracehill. Two hundred years later, the trees have formed a magical tunnel of intertwined and tangled branches, giving a spectacular mix of shadow and light.
Today the Dark Hedges are said to be haunted by a wispy figure known as The Grey Lady. Legend has it that she glides along the road and vanishes as she passes the last beech tree, although she is yet to be captured on camera.
It is rumoured that she is the ghost of a maid from a nearby house who died in mysterious circumstances hundreds of years ago. Others suggest she is a lost spirit from an abandoned graveyard, in the fields nearby.
Whether the Grey Lady legend is true or false, through its association with the equally spooky Game of Thrones, the Dark Hedges has become one of the most photographed landscapes in Northern Ireland.
