Celebrating Father's Day! Paying Tribute to Our Everyday Heroes – Our Wee Legends!
As we’re nudging towards the third Sunday in June, it’s high time we turned the spotlight on a group of folk who often become our first superheroes, our top-tier advisors, and our solid-as-a-rock supporters - our Da’s. You’ve got it, Father’s Day is nigh, this year it’s the 18th of June. But have you ever scratched your head over why we mark Father’s Day, and why it’s always the same time every year? Let’s dig into the story and significance of this mighty day.

Father’s Day is a day we set apart to honour fatherhood and the bonds of family, with celebrations on different dates all over the globe. Here in Northern Ireland, we traditionally celebrate it on the third Sunday of June, meaning it doesn’t fall on the exact same date each year, but always bobs up between the 15th and 21st of June. The notion of Father’s Day goes back more than a century and has a right interesting tale to it. While Mother’s Day has been a time-honoured celebration for centuries (dating back to when folks would visit their ‘mother church’ on Laetare Sunday), Father’s Day is relatively fresh-faced.
The idea first sprouted in the United States in the early 20th century, following the success of Mother’s Day. It was sparked by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was reared by her Father after her Mother passed on. She was adamant that there should be a day to honour Da’s just as we do for our Ma’s. The first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington, way back in June 1910.
The trend gradually took hold, and the celebration of Father’s Day spread to other countries, including the UK. Even though it doesn’t have the same historical or religious heft as Mother’s Day here in the UK, it’s been welcomed as a day to honour our Da’s and father figures, thanking them for their love, guidance, and support.
On this day, folk often show their gratitude to their Da’s and father figures, including step-Da’s, fathers-in-law, guardians, and family friends, through acts of kindness, gifts, cards, and spending quality time together. It’s a top-notch chance to reflect on the role these special men play in our lives and to show our appreciation.
This year, on the 18th of June, let’s make sure all Da’s and father figures feel appreciated and valued. Whether it’s through a heartfelt card, a special gift from Allster, or simply spending time together, there’s no right or wrong way to celebrate - the most important thing is to show our love and appreciation.
Happy Father’s Day to all the smashing Da’s out there. Your love, strength, and dedication don’t go unnoticed. Remember, a gift from Allster is not just a present, but an expression of love and appreciation that embodies the rich heritage of Northern Ireland. This Father’s Day, let Allster help you express your gratitude and love for your Da in the most authentic Northern Irish way possible.
