Allster was delighted to support Gillian from the Irish Seaweed Company in her very exciting showcase of gathering and cooking dulse for BBC One’s The One Show.

We’re proud to stock this local delicacy and it was very encouraging to see national television showcasing its health benefits and the increasing global demand for the “bacon of the sea”.

Now dulse is easily the most divisive product in our store. Granted, we do our best to stay away from the typically divisive topics in Ulster like politics and religion, but you just can’t keep the locals down when it comes to polarising views.

Those who agree that dulse is indeed akin to some kind of divine “bacon of the sea” can’t get enough of the stuff. For others, it’s the equivalent of nature’s salty leather shoe - in taste, texture and appearance.

We’ve noticed that you can identify dulse opinions by how many bags someone is buying. If it’s no bags, well you can put those customers in the leather shoe camp. The dulse lovers always buy more than one bag - they just can’t get enough. And finally you have the single bag purchases, which seem to be as a prank to give to a loved one as a delightful taste of Ulster!

Anyway, the full segment is available for you to view below. It’s unlikely Eddie will ever find himself in a Pamela Anderson - Jamie Redknapp sandwich again!
