Deborah Hill's 'Crown Liquor Saloon A5 Print' brings to life the historic and architectural splendour of one of Belfast's best-known pubs. Originally opened as The Railway Tavern by Felix O'Hanlon and later bought and renovated by Michael Flanagan in 1885, the Crown Liquor Saloon, also known as the Crown Bar, is a prime example of a Victorian gin palace. Located on Great Victoria Street in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the pub was refurbished in 1885 and has been meticulously maintained ever since.
The Crown is renowned for its elaborate tiling, stained glass, and woodwork, a legacy of the Italian craftsmen whom Flanagan enlisted. These artisans, originally in Belfast to work on new churches, contributed to making the Crown one of the finest Victorian gin palaces of its era. The National Trust purchased the property in 1978 and completed a significant renovation in 1981, restoring the bar to its original Victorian splendour, with further restoration in 2007. This commitment to preservation has earned the Crown Liquor Saloon a Grade A Listed Building status by the Environment and Heritage Service.
